About Our Church

The first Masses celebrated in Warner Robins were held at the USO Hall on an altar made from stacked Coke crates and boards. On September 23, 1945, in the building we now know as the "Parish Hall," the first Mass of Sacred Heart Parish in Warner Robins was celebrated in our church by our founding Pastor, Rev. Harold Gaudin, S.J. In addition to serving as the church, this building also housed the church offices, the social hall, and the pastor's residence. The original church could seat around 200 people.

In September 1955, Sacred Heart School started and in 1956 the Presentation Sisters arrived from Ireland to take charge of the school. On February 8, 1962, the second Sanctuary was dedicated to handle our growing number of parishioners. It seated 500 people.

About our Priests

Father FredOn May 25, 1968, Deacon Frederick J. Nijem, Jr., entered the brand-new Saint John the Evangelist Church in Valdosta, to become the first priest ever ordained there. The church's pastor, Father Thomas J. Payne, waived the privilege of celebrating the first Mass in his new church, commenting, "I think it's the most appropriate thing that could happen to a new church-to launch a new priest. We broke ground last July with this in mind."

Updates from the Church

Underlying our second reading today is that while in prison Paul has received a monetary gift from the Christian community at Philippi. In other places Paul says that he will not accept pay for his ministry, perhaps so as not to be associated with others who exacted pay for their teaching and preaching. Paul was a tent maker and said he would pay his own way. However, he did accept this gift from the Philippians because he considered this community as his partners in the Gospel.

Today we celebrate Respect Life Sunday. The Respect Life program begins anew each year on this Sunday, the first Sunday of October. This program is sponsored by the US Council of Catholic Bishops. The purpose of this program is to educate us concerning the numerous human life issues that we face each day.

It has been mentioned to me that there are children of grade school age who are playing on their iPad during Mass. The mention was made because people around them found the activity very distracting during Mass. And rightly so. It is very difficult to pay attention during Mass let alone having persons around you doing something totally unrelated to the Mass. Do you appreciate going to a movie only to have people around you whispering about everything other than the movie? I call on the parents of these children to stop this behavior during Mass. For at least three reasons: First, if you let children do what they want, when they want, wherever they want, you are on the road to raising a possible monstrosity. Secondly, it is a serious distraction to those around you. Please have some consideration for others. Thirdly, because I ask you to stop this behavior, thank you.
