About Our Church

The first Masses celebrated in Warner Robins were held at the USO Hall on an altar made from stacked Coke crates and boards. On September 23, 1945, in the building we now know as the "Parish Hall," the first Mass of Sacred Heart Parish in Warner Robins was celebrated in our church by our founding Pastor, Rev. Harold Gaudin, S.J. In addition to serving as the church, this building also housed the church offices, the social hall, and the pastor's residence. The original church could seat around 200 people.

In September 1955, Sacred Heart School started and in 1956 the Presentation Sisters arrived from Ireland to take charge of the school. On February 8, 1962, the second Sanctuary was dedicated to handle our growing number of parishioners. It seated 500 people.

About our Priests

Father FredOn May 25, 1968, Deacon Frederick J. Nijem, Jr., entered the brand-new Saint John the Evangelist Church in Valdosta, to become the first priest ever ordained there. The church's pastor, Father Thomas J. Payne, waived the privilege of celebrating the first Mass in his new church, commenting, "I think it's the most appropriate thing that could happen to a new church-to launch a new priest. We broke ground last July with this in mind."

Updates from the Church

One Monday morning a man called the office wanting to speak to the pastor. He said, "Father, I want to talk with you about something that happened at Mass." Just what every pastor wants to hear. Did an usher step on his foot, literally or figuratively? Did the person next to him give the cold shoulder? Was my sermon too strong, too soft? He was an educated man, a thoughtful man. I figured he had enough evidence to make the case - whatever the case may be.

This week on October 4th we will celebrate the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. Thousands of pilgrims of all faiths will gather at the medieval town of Assisi to recall a great man who lived about 800 years ago and reformed the Catholic Church, changing it forever.

Jesus uses two garden images today to talk about faith: a mustard seed and a Mulberry tree. Why does Jesus pick a Mulberry tree? Because its root system is one of the most entrenched of all trees. Impossible to dig up, but with faith the size of a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, Jesus says, it can be uprooted into the sea.

Pope Benedict XVI has completed his historic visit to The British Isles. It was historic because the heads of the Anglican and Roman churches have not met formally for close to 450 years. Queen Elizabeth, head of the Anglican Church invited Pope Benedict and he courageously accepted the Queen's invitation.

A couple of Sundays ago I asked folks to meet and greet someone that they did not know. Instead of making a bee-line for your car, I suggested that folks stay behind a moment and introduce themselves to a stranger at Mass. I received the following email from a parishioner who did just that. Please read her email....
